10 DIY projects you can make at home

By David Tran on Oct 12, 2022

In the age of technology and apps, we have almost become lazy. But since we can’t rely on our smartphones to do everything, here are 10 DIY projects you can make at home with common household items to make life easier and more fun!

1) Ornaments made of wool scraps

Every year, we spend a small fortune on holiday decorations. If our budget is really tight, though, we might still want to deck our halls with tinsel and twinkling lights. With these ornaments made from old wool sweaters, that’s not only possible—it’s completely free! If your grandmother has an old sweater in her closet that no longer fits (or isn’t warm enough), don’t toss it. Save it for crafting time!

2) Decorative bowls made from old magazines

A great project for people who want to redecorate their homes but don’t want to spend a lot of money. Recycling old magazines is a great way to make use of something that would otherwise be thrown out. Old magazines are sturdy, cheap, and easy to cut and shape. All you need is some Mod Podge or Elmer’s Glue and a brush.

3) Braided rug made of old T-shirts

Have some old t-shirts lying around? Turn them into a new rug. It’s a great way to recycle those old shirts or even an easy gift for someone special. Just cut your t-shirt into long strips and start braiding! You’ll have a stylish new rug in no time. Here are step-by-step instructions, but it is pretty self-explanatory. The size of your rug depends on how big you want it and how many shirts you want to use as material.

4) Flowers made from jute and coir

Jute and coir rope is made of natural fibers and is inexpensive. First, find a small vase or bucket with a small opening and fill it halfway with water. Now, add as many flowers as you want (the more flowers, obviously, the fuller your bouquet) to your bucket or vase.

5) Tealight lanterns lined up in old jars

Tealight lanterns are a simple DIY project that allows you to add warm, colorful light to any room in your house. You’ll need an empty jar with a wide opening (the wider, the better!), tealights, candle wax or hot glue, and tea lights. Start by removing your jar’s lid and bottom. Then place several layers of tealights inside, making sure they stay upright.

6) Photo frames made of cardboard

Cardboard frames are an eco-friendly way to spruce up your Instagram feed. Simply gather some cardboard and create a frame for your photo. Be creative with it, too! Why not paint it, or add stickers to it? Not only does that add personality but it shows off your creativity and resourcefulness. Plus, when it’s filled with beautiful pictures of family and friends, you’ll enjoy displaying them on your desk.

7) Bracelets made from recycled plastic bottles

There are lots of different ways to craft your own plastic bottle bracelet, but there are a couple of important things to keep in mind when making these creative accessories. Choose bottles that have either been labeled as HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene) or PP (Polypropylene), which are safe for contact with food products. Make sure your bottles have no scents or excess moisture on them and be sure to cut them into strips before removing any caps or labels.

8) Flowers made from old nail polish and wire

Decorating is a delicate art and with that in mind, it only makes sense to use materials that will last for a long time. These flowers are made from old nail polish and some wire. They won’t only add flair to your home, but they also have the added bonus of adding a layer of protection to any item of clothing or furniture that they’re placed on as well. It’s a no-brainer when you look at it like that!

9) Decorative dolls made out of old newspaper

There’s no need to buy new toys for your kids when you have a bunch of old newspapers lying around, waiting to be recycled. To craft a doll for your kids, simply cut out parts of the newspaper and fold them to create basic body shapes. Use them as is or decorate your doll further with colorful markers and crayons. Make other crafts from old newspapers too—newspaper flowers and bird feeders are good ideas too.

10) Decorative mugs made from old ceramic mugs

Check thrift stores for ceramic mugs. Wash them out well and let them dry completely. Mix some resin according to package directions in a disposable container (plastic bowls work great) and press your mug into it with a spoon to cover it completely. Let sit for 24 hours or until set, then remove from resin and let dry for a few days. Voilà! A decorative mug that’s one-of-kind!

While these are all different ways to get over a lockdown, each one of them is unique and caters to an individual’s needs. Try each of these out, and see which ones work best for you. Remember: The most important thing is that you keep working on improving your situation until it gets better. Don’t give up! (I don’t own any credit for the above images)
